Whether you’ve never been to the dentist or simply haven’t visited in a while, you may be wondering what you can expect at your next appointment. The great news is that there’s nothing to be afraid of. If you’re heading to your biannual exam and cleaning soon, here’s what might occur, and why there’s no need to be nervous!
Extended Cleaning
If it’s been a while since your last trip to the dentist, your dental hygienist may need to perform an extended cleaning on your teeth. This is to remove all the built-on plaque that could keep your teeth from looking and feeling their best.
X-Rays
These images will give your dentist a closer look at your teeth and jawbones. They can help spot issues hidden below the surface, such as cavities, tooth infections, and even impacted teeth that may be trapped underneath your gums.
Comprehensive Exam
Next, your dentist will spend some time going over your X-rays and examining your mouth in person. If he or she notices any abnormalities such as cavities or gum disease, this will be added to your chart so your dental team can include it in your treatment plan.
If you have any questions or concerns for your dentist, this is also an excellent time to bring them up.
Consultation and Final Review
Now that your exam and cleaning is over, your dental team will spend a few minutes going through any aftercare instructions, including product recommendations, scheduling future treatments, and any other concerns you may have. It’s a great idea to book your next check-up and cleaning now so you don’t forget to do it later, and to ensure that you get a time and date that works well with your schedule. This way, you won’t have to worry about years going by between appointments! Then, you’ll be free to go back to your day and enjoy the feeling of freshly clean teeth!
