What Happens During a Root Canal?
There are several steps you can expect Dr. Tony or Dr. Judy to take when performing a root canal. Since this procedure involves removing the source of the pain – the infected pulp – it’s important that our team carefully follow each step to ensure successful results. They include:
- Administering local anesthesia to numb your mouth so that you feel no pain throughout your appointment.
- Using a dental dam to isolate your infected or damaged tooth so that moisture cannot reach the affected area.
- Creating a small opening in the top of the tooth (the crown) and accessing the inner pulp chamber and root canals.
- Cleaning out the internal portions of the tooth by removing damaged and infected tissues as well as the pulp before sterilizing this space to remove any remaining bacteria.
- Filling the previously occupied space with gutta-percha, which is a biocompatible substance that helps maintain the tooth’s structure.
- Sealing the tooth to reduce the possibility of reinfection in the future.
Once all of this is complete, we will have a customized dental crown made that fits over the vulnerable tooth, ensuring it remains protected and fully functional moving forward.
