What are Dental Implants?

Made out of biocompatible titanium, dental implants are small posts that look similar to screws but mimic the function of natural tooth roots. When placed into the jawbone, they fuse over time to create the stability needed to support a custom implant crown, bridge, or denture. Once everything is in place, dental implants will continue to stimulate the underlying bone to prevent future tooth loss while also delivering a stunning visual appearance that allows you to enjoy eating, speaking, and smiling.

The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

  • Initial Dental Implant Consultation – Your first meeting will be with our implant dentist, Dr. Tony, who will learn about your goals for your smile. He’ll go over your medical history as well as the health of your smile. While some patients may be cleared to receive dental implants right away, you may need additional treatment to better prepare your mouth for these custom prosthetics. We may recommend gum disease treatment, bone grafting, or tooth extraction.
  • Dental Implant Surgery – Instead of referring you to an outside specialist, our team is pleased to provide the start-to-finish dental implant process in-house. We’ll begin by getting you comfortable before placing each implant post into its designated spot. We’ll use a 3D-printed surgical guide to help ensure optimal accuracy and precision.
  • Dental Implant Osseointegration/Abutment – You can expect to spend 2-6 months allowing healing to occur, which is when your implant posts fuse with the surrounding bone tissues. Once you are healed, you will need to return to our office to receive your metal abutments, which help hold your restoration in place once it is attached to your titanium posts.
  • Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s) – With the end in sight, the last step before being able to start living life with a fully restored smile is receiving your customized restoration. Lab technicians will fabricate a lifelike crown, bridge, or denture based on your needs, and we’ll ensure it fits correctly and comfortably onto your implants.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental bridges and dentures once dominated the restorative landscape when it came to tooth replacement, however, now that dental implants are an option for many, they’re quickly edging out the competition. Here’s why:

  • Dental implants have a lifespan of 30+ years, which is decades longer than their traditional counterparts.
  • They remain the closest thing to natural teeth because of their appearance and function.
  • They allow you to eat all your favorite foods because of the greater bite force they provide.
  • They are easy to maintain, requiring no additional products or instruments to keep them clean.
  • They offer continuous jawbone stimulation that reduces the risk of tooth loss in the future and helps maintain a more supple and youthful appearance.
  • They lower the need to spend money on systemic diseases that are commonly linked to tooth loss, such as osteoporosis and diabetes.
